“The Tax Haven Race”
This week we have a different type of blog post seen as we developed a game; “The Tax Haven Race”. We created this game to teach children (AND adults) about tax in a playful way. By playing the game you learn a lot without even realizing it. And to make it even a bit more fun you can be one of the following top-criminals: Jan-Dirk Paarlberg, Pablo Escobar, Al Capone and Victor van Kommer.
In this game you have to imagine you are a criminal, a very successful one in fact. Dealing drugs has enabled you to earn huge amounts of money. In order to use this money you have to transfer it into an offshore company. This offshore company is located on a bounty island as you can see on the board game. To successfully transfer your money into the offshore company you have to make it to the finish. Once you are the first criminal to reach the finish, you have won the game and your money is safely transferred.
However, on the path towards the finish you will encounter some obstacles by the FIOD (an organization that among other things tries to track down criminals that set up illegally used offshore companies), you will face some difficult decisions in the form of questions, and you will have to pray that the luck is on your side whilst rolling the dice.
You can play this game with 2-4 persons who are above the age of 12. To begin, each player must roll the dice and the person who gets the highest amount of pips can start. The amount of pips show how many steps a player can move (e.g. five pips allows you to move five steps forward). The player that reaches the finish first is the winner of “The Tax Haven Race”. Below you can find an overview of the meaning of the different boxes on the board:
- The pale yellow boxes with numbers: These boxes simply show how many steps you have made already. The game starts with box number “1” and the total amount of steps to reach the finish consists of 35. So the higher the number, the closer to the finish.
- The blue boxes with question marks: When you land on one of these boxes you have to pick a card and answer the question. When you answer correctly you can move an extra step forward, but if your answer is wrong you will have to move one step back.
- The pink boxes with negative numbers: When you land on such a box it means you have to move x steps back (e.g. when it says “-2” you will have to move two steps back).
- The orange boxes with dices: When you land on an orange box you are allowed to roll the dice again. This will get you to the finish even quicker!
- The red boxes with “jail”: When you land on one of these boxes you will have to skip one turn seen as the FIOD detected some suspicious activities regarding your money. However due to lack of evidence they have to let you go again after you have waited one turn.
- The green boxes with negative numbers: When you land on such a box it means you can move x steps forward (e.g. when it says “+2” you can move two steps forward).
- The yellow boxes with the “refresh arrows”: When you land on such a box it means you have to go back to start (number 1). The reason is that the FIOD got hold of the name you were going to give your offshore company, but they did not find you yet. Therefore you get another shot in transferring your money into a new and different offshore company.
- The light blue “finish” box: Once you land on this box it means you have won and outsmarted the FIOD. Congratulations!
